Introduction
Hermès is often celebrated for its leather goods, silk scarves and equestrian heritage, yet many watch enthusiasts still underestimate the brand’s long and serious commitment to fine watchmaking. When I first entered the world of mechanical watches, I knew very little about Hermès as a watchmaker. Over time, as I handled more pieces and learned about the brand’s history, I realised that Hermès watches offer a surprising level of technical depth and a design language that stands apart from traditional Swiss maisons.

Hermès began producing watches in the 1920s through collaborations with Jaeger LeCoultre, Vacheron Constantin and Audemars Piguet. In 1978, the company founded its watchmaking headquarters in Bienne and officially embarked on its modern horological journey. The brand strengthened its vertical integration in 2017 by bringing dial and case production to Le Noirmont. In 2025, Hermès announced an expansion of the Le Noirmont manufacture, scheduled for completion in 2028. These moves underline a long term investment that very few fashion houses commit to.

Today, Hermès is widely recognised by collectors for its inventive complications. The Arceau Le temps voyageur won both the men’s and ladies’ complication prizes at the 2022 GPHG, a rare double win. In 2024, the Arceau Duc Attelé combined a central multi axis tourbillon, minute repeater and a high frequency movement in one extraordinary reference limited to only 24 pieces. These achievements show that Hermès is no longer a peripheral player in watchmaking. It is a serious manufacturer.

However, most buyers looking at Hermès for the first time are not searching for a flying tourbillon or a world timer. They want something elegant, wearable and unmistakably Hermès, ideally within an approachable price range. If you are choosing your first Hermès watch, or selecting a gift for someone else, this guide introduces the maison’s five essential collections. It focuses on models that sit within a reasonable bracket for daily wear while illustrating what makes Hermès design so distinctive.

Arceau Duc Attelé Tourbillon Minute Repeater Watch
The best first Hermès watch depends on lifestyle, wrist size, personal style and how much of the brand’s design DNA you want to express. Below, we look at the five collections you should consider as your starting point.
1. Arceau
Hermès’ Most Poetic and Timeless Design
The Arceau is one of the most recognisable Hermès watch designs, created in 1978 by Henri d’Origny. The asymmetrical lugs draw inspiration from horse stirrups, a subtle nod to the maison’s equestrian roots. Paired with slanted numerals that evoke movement, the Arceau offers a style that is elegant, slightly whimsical and quintessentially Hermès.

Arceau Series Watch

Price: $4620
The Arceau series watch before us features a stainless steel case with a diameter of 40mm, paired with the signature asymmetrical lugs. The white lacquered dial has a two-hand layout, with a date display at 6 o’clock, fully meeting the daily time-reading needs. The overall design of the watch is simple, sleek, and highly practical.
The watch comes with a calfskin leather strap, available not only in brown but also in black, blue, and other options. A watch strap is often overlooked, but the leather straps of Hermès watches are truly worth knowing about..
Hermès’ first foray into watches began with leather straps. The leather used for Hermès watch straps is the same as that used for their well-known handbags and saddles, including goatskin, calfskin, ostrich leather, and crocodile leather (though lizard skin is rarely used). In other words, the standards Hermès applies to saddle-making are exactly the standards applied to the making of their watch straps.

The strap stitching uses the classic "saddle stitching" technique;
The keeper with six stitches is extremely rare
The Hermès watch in front of us is made from leather that cannot be treated with any chemicals or varnishes; all the colors we see come from natural pigments. Moreover, each piece of leather undergoes a 'massaging' process before production, using tools made entirely from natural materials. For example, the calfskin used in this watch is softened with tree bark. In addition, Hermès has strict standards for sewing the leather straps and even for making the clasps. I personally highly recommend everyone find an opportunity to try one on and experience the top-notch comfort that Hermès leather straps provide.

For example, the Arceau Grande Lune (Large Moon Phase) watch is equipped with a large moon phase module. On its sunburst blue dial, the moon phase and date display located at the 6 o'clock position are adorned with a beautiful starry sky.For the Arceau Petite Lune (Small Moon Phase) watch, the moon illuminates the dial from the 10 o'clock position.

Arceau Rocabar de rire watch employs the techniques of horsehair marquetry, hand engraving, and miniature painting.
Arceau Locomotion “Hermès Surreal Hub” watch uses miniature painting techniques to create a multi-dimensional perspective.
There is also the aforementioned ‘Arceau Le Temps Voyageur’ watch (equipped with a world time function), the Arceau Duc Attelé Tourbillon Minute Repeater watch, as well as the Arceau Le Temps Suspendu watch with Hermès’ 'Time Suspended' module, and the Arceau L’Heure de la Lune moon-phase watch featuring a double moon phase display, and many more.
At the same time, the Arceau collection is also an important platform for Hermès to showcase its exquisite artisanal craftsmanship. The dials of Arceau watches frequently feature Hermès’ rich techniques, including gold thread embroidery, enamel, engraving, miniature painting, and inlay work.
If you appreciate poetry in design and a quieter form of luxury, the Arceau is one of the strongest first choices.
2. Heure H
The Most Iconic Hermès Fashion Forward Design
Designed in 1996 by Philippe Mouquet, the Heure H is instantly identifiable thanks to its bold H shaped case. Although it is more fashion oriented than the Arceau, it remains one of Hermès’ best known watch collections and represents an important chapter in the brand’s contemporary aesthetic.

Heure H
Model:W036709WW00
Price:$4,259 USD (Approximately)
Philippe Mouquet transformed the signature Hermès “H” into the watch case itself, with the four corners of the letter extending outward to form the lugs. The result is a design with instant recognisability. If you simply love the Hermès aesthetic, the Heure H collection is one of the best choices for your first Hermès watch.
Take this small model as an example. It is made of stainless steel and has a 25 millimetre case diameter, which suits the typically smaller wrist size of many Asian women. Viewed from the side, the “H” case has a subtle curvature that allows it to sit comfortably on the wrist. The centre of the white dial is decorated with a sunburst pattern that adds depth and refinement. The hour and minute hands pair with Hermès’ signature Arabic numerals to create a clear and elegant display.
This model is fitted with an elephant grey calfskin strap equipped with the Swift interchangeable system. With a simple tool, the strap can be removed or attached with ease.

Beyond the small stainless steel models, the Heure H collection offers a wide variety of options. In terms of materials, there are stainless steel, gold-plated stainless steel, and diamond-set versions. As for sizes, they range from the mini at 21 millimetres, to small at 25 millimetres, medium at 30 millimetres, and large at 34 millimetres. Combined with different strap colours and materials, each Heure H watch has its own personality. Buyers can easily choose a model that fits their budget and personal preference.
Another reason the Heure H series is so popular is its versatility. Some watches may look beautiful but feel off when worn, yet the Heure H suits almost everyone. It complements different skin tones and integrates effortlessly with various styles, making it ideal for daily wear while remaining appropriate for formal occasions. In short, it is a truly “rewarding” watch.
Best for
Female buyers or anyone who enjoys design centric watches. The quartz versions offer an accessible price point and very practical daily wear.
3. Hermès Cape Cod
Casual, Versatile and Distinctly Hermès
The Cape Cod was also designed by Henri d’Origny and introduced in 1991. The idea began as a square inside a rectangle, framed by Hermès’ classic Chaine d’Ancre motif. It later became famous worldwide partly due to the Double Tour strap designed by Martin Margiela, which wraps twice around the wrist and remains one of Hermès’ most recognisable watch silhouettes.

Cape Cod
Model: W047600WW00
Price: $5,157 USD (Approximately)
Looking purely at the case design, the Cape Cod and Heure H collections share a similar approach, with the case and lugs integrated into a single form. However, unlike the sharply defined edges of the Heure H, the Cape Cod case is more rounded, giving it a softer, more approachable appearance.
The model shown above is crafted from stainless steel and measures 37 millimetres in diameter. Its rectangular case houses a square dial. The off-white silver-plated dial features a simple two-hand layout, with a date display positioned at six o’clock. One of the standout design details is the Arabic numerals, which echo the iconic anchor chain motif of the case, most noticeable at the numeral eight. Inside, the watch is powered by an automatic movement with a 42-hour power reserve.
This model is paired with a double tour strap, which also features a quick-release system. Observant watch enthusiasts will have noticed that from 2024 onwards, double or multi-wrap straps are increasingly popular in the women’s market. This strap design is not only practical but also serves as a strong decorative element.

During Margiela's tenure in 1998, the advertising campaign for the Cape Cod Double Tour (Double Wrap Strap) watch showcased a spirit of relaxed elegance and fashion.
The design of the Double Tour (double wrap strap) began precisely with the Cape Cod collection. The story starts with the famous designer Martin Margiela. It is said that while he was a student, Margiela once wrapped the buckled leather strap used for securing luggage around his waist as a long belt.
In 1997, after Margiela took the helm as the Creative Director of Hermès, he integrated this interesting and bold "personal preference" into the Cape Cod collection. In 1998, the Cape Cod Double Tour watch was launched, making it the first double wrap strap watch in watchmaking history.
Margiela lengthened the strap, breaking the inherent proportions, much like the way he designed fashion. The way the watch case (or 'head') and the strap were combined became more diversified. The "Double Tour" double wrap strap design has been continued by Hermès to this day, and even by today's aesthetic standards, it remains classic, fashionable, elegant, and captivating.

Furthermore, the Cape Cod collection now offers a variety of dial patterns, craftsmanship, and material combinations. For example, there are dials crafted with freshwater mother-of-pearl and champlevé enamel techniques, paired with a brown calfskin strap, offering a blend of softness and competence. Another example is a dial created with white mother-of-pearl, paired with diamond hour markers and a stainless steel bracelet, which further emphasizes feminine elegance and grace.

4. Hermès H08
The Sporty and Contemporary Choice
Launched in 2021, the H08 marked a bold departure for Hermès. It is a sporty, modern watch built around a cushion shaped case, textured dial, and integrated rubber or fabric strap. The design feels technical and masculine while maintaining Hermès refinement.

Hermès H08
Model: W049430WW00
Price: $8,262 USD (Approximately)
For example, this Hermès H08 watch is crafted from titanium, giving it a lightweight quality that makes it comfortable for long hours of wear, whether during sports or commuting—a definite advantage. The titanium case has a cushion shape with gently chamfered edges and is coated with a matte black DLC finish. It measures 42 millimetres in diameter and is water-resistant to 100 metres. In terms of finishing, both the case and bezel feature extensive brushed surfaces, enhancing the watch's luxury appeal.

The round dial is paired with Hermès' uniquely styled numerals, which subtly echo the shape of the case. The dial features a three-hand layout, with the tip of the seconds hand adorned with a small Hermès orange triangle, while the tail end mirrors the case's shape—a thoughtful design detail that brings a smile.
The centre of the dial is textured with a granular finish, and the minute track is satin-brushed, creating layers of visual depth. The hour markers and hands are coated with Super-LumiNova® to ensure legibility in low-light conditions. A date display is positioned at four-thirty. The H08 offers all the essential timekeeping functions for daily wear. Inside, it houses Hermès' in-house H1837 automatic movement, which provides a 50-hour power reserve.
Beyond this model, the H08 line has continued to expand with new releases over the years. For instance, in 2023, Hermès introduced the first H08 chronograph, featuring a new high-performance case material made from carbon fiber and graphene powder—lightweight, durable, and with a distinctive texture. It also employs a single-button chronograph system, allowing the wearer to start, stop, and reset the timer sequentially by pressing the crown at three o'clock.

5. Hermès Cut
The Newest and Most Feminine Collection
In 2024, Hermès introduced a brand-new watch collection for watch enthusiasts worldwide—the Hermès Cut. In total, the Hermès Cut watch comes in four different variations: the steel model, the steel model set with diamonds, the two-tone model (steel and rose gold), and the two-tone model set with diamonds.

Hermès Cut Collection Watch
Model: W403190WW00
Price: $8,661 USD (Approximately)
For beginner collectors, the steel model is a very suitable choice. The Hermès Cut watch features an integrated design for the case and bracelet, placing it within the category of popular luxury sports watches.

Hermès Cut Detail
As we've discussed before, the Hermès Cut case is unique among luxury sports watches. You might call it cushion-shaped, yet the edges are not that sharp; you might call it round, yet some facets are still visible to the naked eye. In Hermès' own words, this case is "circular, yet not entirely round."
The essence of the Hermès Cut lies in the side profile of the case—both sides are beveled, then polished, revealing distinct facets. Simply put, the side of the case looks as if it has been given Hermès' signature "single cut", and the Hermès Cut was thus born.
The Hermès Cut watch has a diameter of 36 millimeters. It is said that Hermès settled on this dimension as the most suitable size for the Hermès Cut case shape only after a series of tests and considerations for aesthetics. The Hermès Cut watch also boasts a water resistance of 100 meters, which is on par with the average level of popular luxury sports watches on the market.
The crown, located between the 1 and 2 o'clock positions, is another design highlight of the Hermès Cut watch. Its main purpose is not just for "uniqueness," but more importantly, to ensure the overall integrity and aesthetic appeal of the case (specifically to avoid the "cut" on the side of the case).

Hermès Cut Detail
The round opaline silver dial utilizes a three-hand layout. Do you remember the subtle detail on the H08's second hand? The second hand of the Hermès Cut watch features a similar design, adorned with a baton shape at its tail, echoing the form of the hour and minute hands.
The edges and facets of the three-dimensional Arabic numeral hour markers adopt a rounded shape, complementing the "circular, yet not entirely round" style of the watch case. Notably, the design of the numeral 10 almost perfectly replicates the shape of the case! By this point, you've likely realized that whenever Hermès watches use numeral hour markers, the font styling always shares an intricate connection with the watch case. These numerals are all part of Hermès' exclusive typeface.
The Hermès Cut watch is powered by the H1912 self-winding movement, exclusively developed by Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier. It is one of the main forces among Hermès' in-house movements and offers a power reserve of approximately 50 hours when fully wound.

Another major highlight of the Hermès Cut watch is the Hermès exclusive "quick-release" strap system. Hermès has provided both a metal bracelet and a rubber strap to complement various wearing styles. The rubber strap, in particular, is available in a considerable range of colors.
This exclusive "quick-release" system is located at the connection point between the case and the strap/bracelet. It is exceptionally easy to operate: simply press and hold the clasp and pull slightly downwards, and the strap/bracelet will detach from the case. Installation is just as straightforward: press and hold the clasp again and align the strap with the connection point.

The straps for the Hermès Cut watch can also be purchased separately
Hermès specifically sells individual straps, with the rubber strap offering up to 9 different colors to choose from. Each rubber strap is priced at $299. It is recommended that if your budget allows, you purchase an extra strap when you acquire the Hermès Cut watch—changing the strap is like getting a whole new watch!
Summary
The Hermès watch product line is rich and diverse, with each collection having its own "specialized focus." In an interview with Mr. Laurent Dordet, CEO of Hermès Horloger, he once told us, "The quality and precision of Hermès watches are as good as any specialized watch brand, but the design of Hermès watches must be different from all other watch brands." To this day, this remains the core philosophy of Hermès watchmaking.
Well, that concludes today's introduction to so many Hermès watches. We believe you have found a model you love! As always, these five major series of Hermès watches are all excellent choices for daily wear.
And with the upcoming year 2026, acquiring an Hermès watch would be perfectly fitting
